Surya Namaskar - Day 1

Today is the first day of my 30 days practice I am going to undertake.
I started with some loosening asanas of legs, shoulders and neck rotations and bends.

I have been doing Surya Namaskar for around two and half months so I had the readiness to start with 14 rounds. Each round of Surya Namaskar consists of two sets. Following are the stsps I follow, which is as per the Bihar School of Yoga methodology.

1. I start with Pranamasana which is the first Asana with normal breathing.
2. With inhalation, Hasta Utthanasana.
3. With exhalation, Padhastasana.
4. With inhlation, Ashwa Sanchalasana, the right leg goes back.
5. With exhalation, Parvatasana which is also known as Adhomukh Swanasana (downward facing Dog).
6. Ashtanga Namaskar with no breathing.
7. With Inhalation, Bhujanasana.
8. With exhalation, Parvatasana.
9. With inhlation, Ashwa Sanchalasana, bring left leg back.
10. With exhalation, Padhastasana.
11. With inhalation, Hasta Utthanasana.
12. Pranamasana.

Now I repeat the same steps in the second set with left leg going back in the step 4 and also in step 9.

So one round of Surya Namaskar consists of 2 sets.

I will write in more details about Surya Namaskar, both the theory and my own experience during the course of next few weeks.

As I was already doing 7-8 rounds per day for last two and half months, therefore I thought I could start with 14 rounds for this experiment.

Today I decided to perform three rounds of Surya Namaskar four times and in the last batch I completed the rest of the two rounds. The first four batches were done slowly and the last round was done briskly. In between two batches I rested for around 2 minutes, observing my breath. I also tried to notice the warmth in the body and the sweating. I basically tried to observer the changes in the body.

After two days I will try to practice in batches of 4 and increase it to 5 in each batch after two days. Eventually I plan to practice in two batches of fourteen. Depending on the strength and stamina I may try to perform one batch of fourteen rounds on the 10th day. Lets see how it goes.

After I completed the 14 rounds the legs felt bit weak. I lied down in Shavasansa after that for 15 minutes. But after few hours I am again back to normal self. I guess two and half months of practice has made me stronger. I remember when I started I used to get very tired in 4 rounds and my legs used to shake due weakness. The legs are definitely stronger now and I have lot more stamina. At least that much is proved till this point, but I want to intensify the practice and observer what happens, which is the ultimate aim of this experiment.

My First Experiment - Sun Salutations - Surya Namaskar

The first experiment which I m going to do is Sun Salutation also known as Surya Namaskar. This is a routine consisting of 12 Asanas performed one after another. Each movement is synchronized with breathing. It is important that breathing is done only through nose.

Currently I do around 7-8 rounds of Sun Salutation every day, but I during this experiment I will be starting with 14 rounds for initial 10 days. From there I will increase one round per day till I reach 21. For rest of the days of my 30 days experiment I will stick to 21 rounds.

I will be recording my experiences in this blog.

After the completion of 30 days depending on my experience I will decide further course of action.

I will also get my self checked medically during initial phase and at the end of 30 days to determine the affects on body.
